Red Sea impasse remains despite the Global Naval Coalition

Posted on December 26, 2023

The global shipping industry is cautiously optimistic about the newly formed US-led naval coalition in the Red Sea.

The US and a coalition of 10 countries established Operation Prosperity Guardian to enhance security in Red Sea ship navigation.

The countries are the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Bahrain and the Seychelles.

Ongoing concerns arise as major players in the oil and container industries suspended transits due to recent Houthi attacks off Yemen.

Despite the coalition's official launch, many ships chose alternative routes to avoid the southern Red Sea.

Large container vessels, initially stuck in the Red Sea, are now opting for routes through the Mediterranean and the west coast of Africa.

Houthis continue to target ships, as illustrated by a recent drone attack on the Swan Atlantic chemical tanker.
