SC Ports to cut vessel queues with new operational solutions

Posted on July 5, 2024   |

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) is reducing vessel queues by implementing operational solutions and temporarily pausing toe wall construction for ocean carriers and cargo owners.

These solutions have already decreased wait times and reduced the number of ships waiting.

The port has been dealing with a ship backlog due to a software issue in May and berth impacts at Wando Welch Terminal from toe wall construction.

Starting July 3, SC Ports will pause toe wall construction at Wando Welch Terminal to reopen all three berths until July 14, speeding up ship processing and clearing the remaining anchorage.

SC Ports aims to work ships on arrival by mid-July, and as the wall construction resumes in August, a 48-hour average wait is expected.

By late fall, the port expects to handle three ships simultaneously at Wando Welch Terminal, with the project slated for completion in March 2025, and the Leatherman Terminal reopening to add another berth.

Toe wall construction, which began in March 2024, involves installing steel sheets in sections, initially accommodating three ships but later reducing to two berths, causing longer wait times.
