Shanghai Port crossed 50 million TEU for the first time on December 22, marking a major milestone since it began container operations in 1978 with just 7,951 TEU.
The port handled 1 million TEU in 1994, surpassed 10 million TEU in 2003, and reached 40 million TEU in 2017.
In 2023, it processed 49.16 million TEU.
Shanghai Port runs nearly 350 international routes, linking over 700 ports across 200+ countries and partners with 22 ports along the Yangtze River, including 16 in the Yangtze River Delta.
The port expects water-to-water transshipment to exceed 60%, setting a record.
Its sea-rail transport network, launched in 2019, currently operates 10 daily routes and plans to handle over 900,000 TEU in 2024, reflecting 40% annual growth.
The port uses automation and digital technology to manage its large cargo volumes. Since 2017, the Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal has processed 35 million TEU in 7 years.
In August 2024, the port began expanding the Luojing Container Terminal, converting a coal and ore terminal for container operations.
Phase I features four berths with an annual capacity of 2.6 million TEU.
