Ship and dock foremen strike in Western Canada canceled for 8 July

The strike by ship and dock foremen at western Canadian ports was canceled after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) found the union's strike notice violated labor laws.

The BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) claimed the 72-hour strike was organized in “bad faith” and breached the Canada Labour Code.

The union has not yet commented on the CIRB's decision.

The strike was planned to protest DP World's labor contracts, focusing on issues with overtime, retirement benefits, and job losses due to automation.

The BCMEA had warned that the strike could lead to a shutdown of all cargo operations in the region, except for cruises and grain vessels.

The CIRB's ruling averted a potential coast-wide lockout and widespread disruption of cargo operations at member companies.
