Shipping delays mount in Shanghai, Ningbo, and Kaohsiung due to Typhoon Kong-Rey

Typhoon Kong-Rey caused major congestion at Asian container ports, including Shanghai, Ningbo, and Kaohsiung.

The typhoon, the strongest to hit Taiwan since 1996, disrupted operations at Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s main container port.

Kaohsiung is experiencing 100% delays for all incoming box ships, with 69 vessels scheduled over the next week.

Ships like Contship Era and YM Wreath faced over 24-hour delays before they could berth in Kaohsiung.

Shanghai and Ningbo stopped some operations on Friday, leading to delays of 82% and 85%, with 195 and 116 boxships expected in the coming week.

Ships such as Kota Ganding, KMTC Manila, and Wan Hai 363 arrived in Shanghai on Saturday but will only berth today or tomorrow, with further delays for other vessels.

Congestion in North Asian ports worsened by the end of the week, with Typhoon Kong-Rey causing long queues and possibly lowering freight rates if capacity issues continue.
