Timber cargo ship causes major river blockage in Cambridgeshire, UK

Posted on July 1, 2024   |

An 80-meter cargo ship, the Baltic Arrow, carrying timber became stuck in the River Nene in Cambridgeshire, similar to the 2021 Suez Canal blockage.

The ship grounded around 9 am while traveling to Wisbech from Riga, Latvia.

Flying the St Kitts and Nevis flag, the ship has six crew members and two local pilots on board, with no injuries or damage reported.

The grounding likely happened due to the tide going out while part of the vessel touched the riverbank.

The cargo ship was transporting timber to the port of Wisbech.

This incident is reminiscent of the 2021 Suez Canal blockage, which disrupted global shipping.
