Union ramps up pressure in Montreal dockworker's dispute with overtime refusal

Posted on October 9, 2024   |

The union at the Port of Montreal (CUPE Local 375) has notified that it will stop working overtime from Thursday, October 10, with no set end date.

Canadian labor law requires the union to give 72 hours notice before taking action.

Port workers have been without a new contract since December 31, 2023.

The union says talks have stalled, mainly due to disagreements over scheduling.

The Maritime Employers Association (MEA) warned the overtime ban will cause slowdowns due to incomplete work shifts.

The MEA also stated workers on incomplete shifts will not be paid.

The Montreal Port Authority highlighted that the dispute comes at a busy time for harvest season exports and imports.
