Union's strike shut several key US West Coast ports

Labor actions disrupted work at many essential US West Coast ports, all of which are part of prolonged negotiations for a new contract for dockworkers.

Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) shut operations at the Ports of LA and Long Beach.

Operations at the ports of Tacoma, Oakland, Hueneme, and Seattle are also down.

The disruption is damaging the state’s essential ports that handle cargo from Asia.

Moreover, the doubtful negotiations prompted many importers to redirect their cargo away from the West Coast until an agreement is approved.

12,000 members of ILWU's Local 13 chapter in Southern California voiced their displeasure with the ocean carriers and terminal operators’ position.

The ILWU and the PMA (Pacific Maritime Association) are in talks for a new labor contract since May 2022 to replace the one that lapsed on July 1, which has been extended into their 13th month.

In Q1 2023, West Coast ports processed 40% of US container imports, down from 45% in the same period in 2019.
