US blacklists Cosco Ocean Carrier over links to China’s military

Posted on January 16, 2025   |

The United States blacklisted China’s largest shipping company, China Cosco Shipping Corp. Ltd., and two major shipbuilders due to ties with China’s military.

Cosco Shipping (North America) and Cosco Shipping Finance Co. Ltd., subsidiaries of Cosco, were also added to the blacklist for operating in the U.S.

Cosco ranks as the 4th-largest container shipping company globally, operating over 504 ships.

The U.S. added China Shipbuilding Trading Co. and China State Shipbuilding (CSSC) to the blacklist under U.S. law.

The U.S. claimed that China’s rise as the world’s top shipbuilder in 2024 was due to unfair business practices.

China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), a state-owned oil trading company, was also blacklisted.

The blacklist now includes CRRC Corp., China’s largest railcar maker, and CIMC, a major marine container manufacturer.
