US East and Gulf Coast employers seek to restart ILA negotiations with NLRB charge

Posted on September 27, 2024   |

USMX, the employers’ association for East and Gulf Coast ports, has filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to restart talks with the ILA.

The charge includes an unfair labor practice complaint and requests urgent relief due to the ILA's refusal to negotiate a new contract.

This action requires the ILA to engage in bargaining to reach an agreement.

Under the National Labor Relations Act, both unions and employers can file unfair labor practice (ULP) charges with the NLRB.

The Act prevents unions from avoiding negotiations with the employers they represent.

After a ULP charge is filed, the NLRB will investigate the issue and seek solutions if the charge is found to be valid.
