U.S. lawmaker proposes bill for Panama Canal purchase negotiations

The Panama Canal Repurchase Act of 2025, introduced in Congress, aims to allow President Donald Trump to negotiate buying back the Panama Canal.
The act enables the president and the secretary of state to begin talks with Panama’s government about reacquiring the canal.
It requires the president to update Congress within six months, providing details on negotiation progress, challenges, and expected outcomes.
Sixteen Republican lawmakers have already supported the bill, highlighting strong backing within the party.
Supporters express concern over China’s growing influence, noting Panama’s inclusion in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Chinese companies managing ports at both ends of the canal.
Advocates believe U.S. control of the canal would improve national security, boost global influence, and generate economic benefits from toll revenues.
The canal is crucial for U.S. trade, handling 72% of vessels linked to U.S. ports and serving Coast Guard and defense ships.
Without canal access, shipping routes would add 8,000 miles around South America, leading to higher costs and longer transit times.
