US port activity remains strong with an ongoing rise in container flows

March witnessed another impressive month for the main US ports, as imports at the nation's top ten gateways surged by nearly 20% compared to the previous year.

These ports, responsible for handling 86% of US import traffic, recorded a 19.2% growth in inbound containers compared to March 2023, signaling the ongoing strength of the US economy.

Total import volumes in the US for March approached 1.82 million TEU, with ports on the east and Gulf coasts experiencing a turnaround, growing by 21.9% compared to 16.2% growth on the west coast.

Los Angeles retained its status as the primary import gateway, processing just under 380,000 TEU with a growth rate of 18.6%, followed by New York & New Jersey and Long Beach.

Oakland emerged as the fastest-growing port, with a remarkable year-on-year volume increase of 38.4% to 83,500 TEU.

US exports also showed positive momentum, increasing by 7.6% year-on-year to reach 930,500 TEU, with Los Angeles surpassing Houston as the leading export port.
