US rail traffic falls by 4% in week ending January 13th

On January 13th, the weekly rail traffic recorded a total of 457,453 carloads and intermodal units, showing a 4.1% drop from the same week the previous year.

Weekly carload volume reached 213,277, marking a significant 10.2% decline compared to the corresponding week in 2023.

In contrast, weekly intermodal volume showed resilience, with 244,176 containers and trailers, reflecting a 1.9% increase from the same week the previous year.

Among the top 10 carload commodity groups, 3 saw increases, while 7 reported declines.

The total North American rail volume for the week ending January 13th, covering 12 U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, reached 316,875 carloads, a decline of 9.1%.

Intermodal units grew by 0.4% to 319,987, resulting in a combined weekly rail traffic of 636,862, down 4.6% from the prior year.
