U.S. rail traffic shows a strong 3% yearly increase in the week ending October 7th

For the week ending October 7th, US rail traffic saw a 3% increase, totaling 499,217 carloads and containers.
Of this, 233,768 carloads were reported, showing a 3.6% rise compared to the previous year.
Intermodal volume for that week reached 265,449 containers and trailers, reflecting a 2.5% increase.
Notably, 7 out of 10 types of cargo saw high shipping activity compared to 2022, including the transportation of 7,937 carloads of forest products.
During the first 40 weeks of 2023, US railroads transported 9,008,598 carloads, marking a 0.4% increase, however, intermodal units fell by 7.9% to 9,594,783.
The total rail traffic in the US for the first 40 weeks of 2023, encompassing carloads and intermodal units, fell by 4.1% to 18,603,381 compared to the same period of 2022.
Looking at rail traffic across North America for the week ending October 7th, there were 346,637 carloads and 349,627 intermodal units, reflecting increases of 2.6% and 0.5% year-over-year, respectively.
Over the first 40 weeks of 2023, rail volume in North America fell by 3.6% to a combined 26,066,184 carloads and intermodal units.
Canadian railroads saw a 3.4% drop in traffic, while Mexican railroads saw a 3.4% increase during the same period.
