U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on EU imports, arguing the bloc was designed to hurt the U.S. economy.
He made this announcement during his first Cabinet meeting after starting his second term.
Trump also revealed that tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada would take effect on March 4, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
The European Union was officially formed in 1993 to strengthen economic ties and cooperation among its member nations.
In 2023, the EU exported €155.8 billion ($159.6 billion) more in goods to the U.S. than it imported but had a €104 billion trade deficit in services.
The EU’s key exports to the U.S. include vehicles, machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
Higher tariffs on EU goods may lead to increased prices for American consumers.
Economists warn that these tariffs could contribute to rising inflation in the U.S.
